Grammage

Papers with different grammages in a modern print shop

What Does Grammage Mean?

Grammage is a measure of paper weight, given in grams per square metre (g/m2). It significantly affects the thickness and strength of the paper, and therefore the handling and quality of the printed product. Papers with a lower grammage of 40–80 g/m2 are relatively thin and light, making them ideal for newspapers and large print runs. Paper types with a higher grammage from 100 g/m2 offer more stability and are particularly suitable for high-quality magazines, brochures, and club magazines. Heavier papers often convey a sense of quality and exclusivity, while lighter papers are more affordable and flexible.

Why Is Grammage Important for Printing?

  • Feel: Determines how sturdy and high-quality the paper feels.
  • Print quality: Higher grammages often result in better colour reproduction, higher print resolution, and less transparency or light permeability.
  • Cost: Heavier and coated papers are usually more expensive than lighter ones, but they’re also more durable.
