The layout area is the printable section of, for example, a newspaper page. It defines the boundaries and design elements on a page and plays a key role in the structure and readability of printed materials. By setting fixed margins and spacing, it ensures a symmetrical and visually clean layout. Especially in newspaper printing, the layout area is often used for production-related reasons depending on the format.
The layout area takes into account elements such as line length, column width and visual balance to create a consistent layout. Especially in multi-column layouts, as commonly found in magazines and newspapers, it helps to separate content clearly and guide the reader’s eye.
In addition, the layout area enables consistent design across multiple pages. By keeping text and images from being placed too close to the edge of the page, it also prevents issues during binding, trimming or folding of the printed product.
While our small-run newspapers in the 280 x 400mm format feature a fixed layout area, you can also print your magazines without margins. Either use our pre-formatted templates or upload your print-ready PDF file directly.
